Hi, I’m Andy Ly
I'm a Bay Area cellist who performs with ensembles including the Berkeley Symphony and Vallejo Symphony, as well as in chamber settings, recitals, and private events. I also teach out of my Pleasanton studio, where I work with students of all ages to build strong technique, confidence, and a real connection to music.
My Path to Music
One of the most influential parts of my training was studying with cellist Daniel Gaisford, who encouraged me to think about music not just as technical execution, but as a practice that requires depth, discipline, and authenticity.
Today, I perform throughout the Bay Area and beyond, spanning from orchestral collaborations to solo recitals. I approach every performance as an opportunity to share music that people can genuinely experience, not just hear in the background.
My relationship with the cello started at 11, when I first heard the Bach Cello Suites and decided I needed to learn them. I taught myself at first—it was pure curiosity that grew into something much deeper.
I went on to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and completed my degree at San Francisco State University, where I won the Concerto Competition performing Bloch's Schelomo.
