I offer private cello lessons at my Pleasanton studio and online. Lessons are typically 60 minutes once a week. Students are expected to practice regularly with daily practice time based on age and level.
My studio is composed of a wide range of students: motivated beginners building strong foundations, advancing players preparing for auditions, and adults who are either starting fresh or returning to the instrument after time away. Standards are consistent for everyone, but the path is tailored to each student’s goals.
My teaching philosophy is shaped by the wide range of teachers and mentors I studied with, whose influences I carry forward while refining my own perspective as both a performer and educator. In practice, this begins with the development of fundamentals such as posture, bow grip, and left-hand setup, with an emphasis on good intonation and sound production. Students develop facility and coordination through the disciplined study of scales, arpeggios, double stops, and etudes, which form the core of technical study. Mastery of bow control, understanding the relationship among bow speed, weight, and contact point, and command of the full range of bow strokes allows for precise articulation, which is essential for phrasing and musical ideas. Left-hand articulation, shifting, and vibrato are also cultivated so that students can play freely and have full control over musical expression.
Students learn to take ownership of their progress. This is achieved by setting specific goals, designing efficient practice blocks, and using short recordings to assess results honestly. We self-evaluate and diagnose problems through critical listening, choose a practice method, and confirm improvement before moving on. Over time, this process builds self-sufficiency; students learn not only to play better, but to teach themselves and eventually to help others. The problem-solving skills of critical thinking, constructive self-evaluation, and effective practicing are useful in the study of music and transferrable to other areas of life well beyond the practice room.
Through this process, students develop their own artistic voice. They learn to shape sound with intention, connect playing to emotion, and share music confidently with others, whether in performance or in collaboration with peers. The pursuit of musical excellence is demanding, but it is deeply rewarding, and the joy of making music is what makes it worthwhile.

We are so grateful for Andy, Madeleine’s cello teacher. From the very first lesson, he has shown remarkable patience, kindness, and a genuine passion for teaching. His support has made a truly positive impact on Madeleine’s musical journey, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have him as her teacher.
Veronica Takata
His patience and expertise have cultivated a genuine love for the cello, which we see grow every week. The progress she has made is truly remarkable and a testament to his teaching style. We appreciate the way he inspires her to embrace challenges and celebrate achievements. Her cello journey started in October of 2024. This month (August) we held a recital for her to play for friends and family to celebrate her completing the 1st Suzuki book.
Thank you for being such an influential and supportive instructor.

Over the past two years of studying with Andy, my playing has improved tremendously. Andy’s teaching style is clear and easy to understand. With his guidance, I was able to master many techniques that I previously struggled with. Thanks to Andy’s teaching, I’ve succeeded in youth orchestra auditions and also earned higher seating placements. Andy is very patient and supportive, and I’ve enjoyed every lesson I’ve had with him.
